PING Command Parameters

PING is one of the most useful commands in determining network connectivity with another IP host. Simply typing PING followed by the specific IP address at the command prompt will immediately tell you whether there is connectivity between your computer and the other host.

There are also a number of options that you can use with the PING command. The available options are listed below.

Leap Second to be Introduced as New Year...

You can get some extra sleep this New Year's Eve. The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) has announced the introduction of a "time step" at the end of December to add a "leap second" as 2006 arrives.

Leap seconds are needed to keep clocks in step with Earth's rotation, which varies by several thousandths of a second per day. Slowing down the clocks every year or two keeps them in sync. As 2005 transitions to 2006, Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) will be retarded by 1.0 second. This essentially means that the last minute in 2005 will be 61 seconds long: December 31, 2005, 23:59:59; December 31, 2005, 23:59:60; January 1, 2006, 00:00:00.

Vonage is a company that offers telephone service over your broadband Internet connection. With Vonage, you don't need a normal telephone connection in your home. You can initiate and receive telephone calls just as you would with any other phone. The one difference is pricing: Vonage is a lot cheaper than the local telephone company's rates. Will You Replace Your Cell Phone with a Wireless Vonage phone?

Vonage has announced that it will soon offer a mobile phone that allows subscribers to use the company's VoIP network whenever they're in a Wi-Fi network. Rather than use a cell phone, Vonage subscribers could enjoy unlimited calling on a portable device as long as they are connected wirelessly to the Internet. Vonage offers unlimited calling for about $25 per month, significantly less than mobile phones companies charge for their unlimited calling plans.

I have a Vonage (wired) Internet phone here and can report that it works well. I'd love to try a wireless version.

Question: How would you make a Wi-Fi phone call when speeding down the expressway? Then again, watching some drivers as they drive and talk simultaneously, maybe it is a good idea if they DON'T call and drive.

Skype for Pocket PC BETA

Skype appears to be the most popular "free telephone calls from computer to computer" available anywhere. The calls are free to other Skype users and you can optionally initiate and receive calls from regular telephones for a fee. Skype has millions of users all over the world. Best of all, the software is available free of charge. It has available for some time for Windows, Macintosh and Linux systems. Now Skype software is available for Pocket PC handhelds and Windows Mobile SmartPhones.
